At St. Joseph’s School, we try to make reading fun and enjoyable for all. We have a school library which is well resourced and all classes have a wide range of texts for children to enjoy.

Reading is a major part of the curriculum. In the early years, reading is introduced through games, activities, sounds and phonic building. From Reception onwards ‘Oxford Reading Tree, is the core reading scheme used in school and all the children take books home regularly. We encourage all children to read throughout the day and at home with members of their family.

In class, teachers use a range of texts in guided reading sessions to develop children’s understanding of the text and their ability to comprehend what happens in stories. From Year 2 onwards weekly ‘Reciprocal Reading’ sessions are also used to develop children’s comprehension skills. These are initially teacher led, but over the course of the year the children themselves take on the responsibility for leading the sessions.
