At St Joseph’s, we offer the opportunity for children to take part in instrumental lessons across Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2 and musical performances three times a year.  Children in Key Stage 2 take part in whole class ensemble and recorder and chalumeau lessons.  They also have the opportunity of small group tuition in violin (Key Stage 1 and Key Stage 2), saxophone and clarinet (Key Stage 2) where parents meet the cost of lessons.
Pupils enjoy their musical experience and make good progress as a result of high expectations for all.  Every child can both make music and benefit from it.  Children also take part in weekly singing during Collective Worship, and regular hymn practices.  We have a well established choir who take part in concerts throughout the year.

The photographs below give a flavour of the musical life of St Joseph’s.

At Christmas, our school choir brought joy to the community by singing at the Parish Lunch Club, the BMW Dealership in Boldon and Holy Cross Care Home

We are incredibly proud of our amazing school choir who were ‘runners up’ in the recent final of The City Sings Competition at the Sunderland Empire under the directorship of our Deputy Head, Miss Brown.  It was a very close call with the judges going to a second vote.  Fantastic effort – well done everyone!

The musical life of the school was well represented at our end of term spring music concert.  Year 6 performed Grieg’s ‘In the Hall of the Mountain King’, on piano, percussion and violins.  Year 5 performed their own composition ‘In a Chinese Garden’ and our violinists, saxophonists and clarinetists performed a range of pieces in small ensembles and as soloists.  The choir also sang a range of pieces including their two ‘City Sings’ award winning songs.  Now we’re already looking forward to our Summer concert!
